This is the first day of the summer learning journey here is the question.
DAY 1: In the Beginning...
Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]
According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the
sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother, and that one day he took his hook,
boarded a boat and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught
a fish. This ‘fish’ was the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes
referred to as Te Ika a M ā ui or ‘M ā ui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a M ā ui or
‘M ā ui’s canoe’.
What are some other cool or interesting facts that you know about Aotearoa New Zealand? List three cool facts about this
fabulous country of ours. '
1. A cool fact is that the official language of NZ is Maori
2.The biggest city in NZ is Auckland but its capital city is Wellington. what????
3. Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sunrise because it is 496.3 kilometers away from the International Date Line. cool !!!!
Hey Noah,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on completing your very first activity with this year's Summer Learning Journey. It was great to see you yesterday and I am excited to see more wonderful posts from your over the summer holidays. We have had an influx of activities completed by students in the Ako Hiko cluster. We have had about 200 activities completed so far. Is that not amazing!
I really loved reading the three facts that you found the most interesting. I did not know that Gisborne was the first place in the world to see the sunrise. That is absolutely fascinating. That makes me want to road trip down at New Year's, so that we can be the first people in the world to see the sun rising in 2019. How cool would that be? If Gisborne is the first city to see the sun rise, where in the world do you think would be the last city in the world to see the sunrise? Maybe you could do some research and share your finding with me.
I think it was great that you shared the question at the beginning of your post. This will help any visitors to your site understand more about the activity you are doing. I am so excited to see many more posts from your over the holidays.
Ka kite,
Megan :)
